Thanks for your post, its really useful.

If i am not wrong We need to RCU to create BIPLATFORM + Metadata Services, but where is the setup to run the RCU ? I have Clicked on the Here link in your post it took me to WEBLOGIC Server download, when i install that it never asked me to create a schema, please guide us to run which service or setup file to get the RCU.

Did you run across any errors when installing this? When I enter the Administrator Details information, it will not proceed. The section label turns red, but there is no error message

Hi Atul,

I am planning to Install OBIEE 11g on RHEL5.
Will you please let us know what is difference between Simple Install, Enterprise Install or Software Only Install.
Especially, If someone is planning to Install OBIEE for Production, which option has to be selected and why?

Thanks.
Ahsan.

Atul Kumar says September 29, 2010

Simple Intall : If you want to install Oracle Business Intelligence quickly for demonstration and evaluation purposes

Enterprise Install : is for organizations with multiple users, and possibly developers, that want to install Oracle Business Intelligence in a secure, clustered environment.

Software Only Install : Install Software but donot configure.

If someone is planning to Install OBIEE for Production, which option has to be selected and why?

Go forEnterprise Deployment for Highest Levels of Availability and Security

For reasons check following link

Thanks Atul,

I am having Oracle 11g R1 (will upgrade to R2) on 1 Linux 5 server and I have 1 more Linux 5 server on which I am planning to install OBIEE 11g.
Just wanted to know few more things like:
1) What is the required structure & size of the database for OBIEE?
2) As, it is going to be 2 node, I will run RCU on DB node??? and then finally,
3) I will start the OBIEE 11g Enterprise installation on the other node.
Just let me know if these steps are correct?
Please let me know your thoughts on this and any Pre-Requisites should I take care of!!!

Many Thanks,
Ahsan

@ Ahsan

– Note RCU can be run from any windows/linux machine as long as that machine can talk to database server and database listener port (default 1521) is open.

– Use sys schema when creating above two schemas

2. For database requirement check http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/ias/downloads/fusion-requirements-100147.html#CHDJGECA

Step you mentioned above for OBIEE 11g installation are correct

Hi,
I want to install OBIEE 11g on windows 7 (64 bit). As part of pre-requiste,when I try to install RCU (rcu.bat/rcu.exe) it pops out compatibility issue with my 64 bit OS. I could not find RCU for 64 bit windows.

Is there a workaround for this??

Please help at the earliest

Reply
Atul Kumar says October 26, 2010

@ Ajit,
RCU is supported only on Windows and Linux that too 32 bit OS . See if you have 32 bit machine (Linux or windows) on network which you can use to create schema in this 64 bit OS.

What is exact error ?

Did you ty to run program after changing compatibility to Windows XP (I doubt though) ?

Reply
Ajit says October 26, 2010

@Atul,

Thanks. I tried running on Compatibility mode (XP< Vista , 98 everything:-)) But no luck.

Apparantly I am trying on a stand alone system.
Is there Oracle script to populate required tables etc in the desired new schema instead of running RCU?

Reply
Atul Kumar says October 27, 2010

@ Ajit,
No there is no script as of today to populate schema.

Use any 32 machine (just to load schema)

1. Can I install OBIEE 11g on same machine having OBIEE 10g already installed?
2. If YES, than how to migrate 10g work products (dashboards, answers etc) to 11?

Thanks for your advise.

@ Sohaib, Check installation logs (under oraInventory) to find reason for hang. It could be as simple as waiting on managed server to start (and start is failing for some reason).

Check logs and fix issue accordingly

OBIEE 11g Administration Tool is part of OBIEE 11g installation software.

Though OBIEE Administration tool is not supported on 64 bit machine. Here is post for workaround http://shivabizint.wordpress.com/2010/08/24/obiee-11g-rpd-is-not-opening-in-windows-64-bit-machine/

Hi Atul,

Nice Article.I want to install OBIEE 11g on my 32 bit windows m/c.

Just one thing installing RCU when need to give the schema name i didn’t give sys and gave a user who is normal user with dba privillege because of which i got some errors like insufficient privilleges like while running something like this…
“grant execute dbms_ouput to dev_mds”
and some plsql object creation failed like “Pl/sql object failed SD Clean up procedure”,at the time when u click create button.

But at the end it showed the schema being created.
So i didn’t bother much about that.
I cannot give sys user as i don’t have my own db in my machine.

But then when i ma trying to install OBIEE i am getting problem in configuration step, create domain is getting failed?

Thanks

Reply
Atul Kumar says December 29, 2010

@ Akshara,
For RCU you should use user with sysdba priviliges. DBA is role and is different from sysdba access.

Ask your DBA to run below command

SQL> grant sysdba to user1;

where user1 is user you are using in RCU to connect to dataabse.

Reply
Akshara says December 30, 2010

Hello Atul,

Thanks for the reply,I did the same way and the RCU creation don’t give any error now, its creates without any error.

But the problem comes in the obiee installation part, in the configuration progress step i.e. Step 11,
BI Configuration shows 0%
and the Creating domain shows In progress
like this for some an hour and then shows failed.

The log file just shows this->
Assigning Port: 9556 to: NODE_MANAGER_PORT

as the last stmt.

Where have i gone wrong?

Thanks

@ Akshara,
Check oraInventory/logs for error message (I am suspecting this could be at starting services because of either port already in use or not enough memory. Logs should tell you exact error)

For oraInventory location check http://onlineappsdba.com/index.php/2009/10/08/orainventory-location-orainstloc-on-windows-linux-unix/

Yes it is possible to have OBIEE11g and Oracle Database 11g on same machine but these two mustbe isntalled in different Oracle_Homes.

On PC then you will have two Oracle_Homes . You have to change Oracle_Home manually depending on activity.

for windows use set ORACLE_HOME=[path]

I think you also get ORACLE_HOME selector in your start menu

To start managed server from console, your node manager should be running.
+
Your managed server should be targeted to machine on which your node manager is running .

Other option is to start your managed server from command line

Check http://onlineappsdba.com/index.php/2008/08/03/oracle-weblogic-server-startupshutdown/

startManagedWebLogic.cmd [managed_server_name] [admin_url]

Hi Atul,

My requirement is to install OBIEE 11g – “Enterprise Install” on windows 2008 R2 Server.
I have successfully installed on one server but when I tried to “Scale out BI System” on second server, it failed after 75% completion. The issue is that the Installer running on second server is not able to start the newly created Managed Server bi_server2. When i checked on the admin console on first server, the status for bi_server2 is “FAILED_NOT_RESTARTABLE” where as bi_server1 is running at port 9704.
I checked that node manager is not able to run on second server. I started the node manager on server 1 by first stopping the windows service and manually running the startNodeManager.cmd. I am not able to do the same on second server.

@ Nitin Aggarwal,
What error message you get when you try to start NodeManager on second node ?

Issue is that Admin Server on Node1 is unable to contact Node Manager on Node2 to start Managed Server on Node2.

Follow these steps on Node2
1. Shutdown any bea service on node2 -> task manager -> Processes -> select check box show processes from all users ->

kill bea***.exe

Hi Atul,

I just referred the documentation. It says –
———————————————–
Considerations and Limitations of Enterprise Install Type for Scaling Out Existing Installations –

The following considerations and limitations apply to the Enterprise Install type when scaling out existing installations:

Do not use the Enterprise Install type to scale out an existing installation on an AIX operating system or with a 64-bit JVM, such as with a supported 64-bit operating system. Use the Software Only Install type instead. For details
———————————————–

I am trying the scale out on 2nd server which is windows 2008(64 bit). Just want to confirm whether it can be done or not on this server?

Thanks

@ Nitin Aggarwal,
Yes it is possible to scale out BI on windows 2008.

My recommendation would be first go through

Installation modes at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/bi.1111/e10539/c1_overview.htm#CJAEDHAJ

and

Installation Scenarios at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/bi.1111/e10539/c2_scenarios.htm#BABHHACA

then follow steps mentioned at

1. Install Just software on windows 2008 64 bit

2. Configure BI using steps at

http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/bi.1111/e10539/c4_installing.htm#CEGEIDBH

Thanks Atul,

I have 1 more question –

I have installed OBIEE 11g on first server(Enterprise Install) and now for scale out on 2nd server, I need to use the “Software only install” option. Now, on 2nd server, i have already run the RCU utility. Do i need to again install weblogic on this 2nd server or I can use the same weblogic home on first server.

Suppose, if I need to install it on 2nd server then on Oracle Site, a generic version is available for 64 bit. Its a zip file. I have installed latest jdk/jre on this server but even then I am getting error when i try to run the installer.jar.

Please let me know the steps for installing Weblogic (generic) via a zip file(no installer available for this).

@ Nitin Aggarwal

Q: On 2nd server, i have already run the RCU utility.

RCU is to create schema in database which you must have already done during OBIEE install on first machine so you should not run RCU again .

Q: Do i need to again install weblogic on this 2nd server or I can use the same weblogic home on first server.

A: You will have to install weblogic on second machine. If this is 64 bit machine then install 64 bit JDK and then use this JDK to install weblogic from jar file.

Check this post on how to install 64 bit weblogic http://onlineappsdba.com/index.php/2009/11/23/how-to-install-weblogic-server-on-64-bit-os-linux-solaris/ (This post is for Solaris)

A: Is this zip file or jar file ? Paste link you are using to download .

Use WebLogic version which is certified with your OBIEE version .

Update OBIEE, Weblogic and JDK version you are using on machine2 .

Hi Atul,

Java Details –

C:\Users\Administrator>java -version
java version “1.6.0_23”
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_23-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode)

——————————————-

OBIEE Details-

Oracle Business Intelligence 11g (11.1.1.3.0)

——————————————-

Weblogic Details –

I get it from here –

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/weblogic/downloads/wls-main-097127.html

File Details –
————
Oracle WebLogic Server 11gR1 (10.3.4) + Coherence –
Package Installer

Additional Platforms (For 64-bit JVM Support, See Note Above)

Generic: 1 GB
File1

So, I got ‘wls1034_generic.zip’. This zip contains 3 jars.

1- com.bea.cie.gpr-impl_3.0.1.0.jar
2- com.bea.cie.gpr-xbean_3.0.1.0.jar
3- installer.jar

I tried to execute the installer.jar by giving the following command on commandline –

C:\Program Files\Java\jre6>java -jar D:\wls1034_generic\installer.jar

and I got the following error –

java.lang.classNotFoundException
com.bea.cie.gpr.internal.model.DelegateHomeListHelper

I am not using any shared or network drive for installation and providing absolute paths only.

@ Nitin,
Since you are using 11.1.1.3 OBIEE installer so in my view you should use weblogic 10.3.3 weblogic i.e. 11g R1 PS2.

With 10.3.3 I think supported Java is 1.6.18 so try with that.

Check Oracle My Support for more information (In my view 1.6_23 should also work but you are using JRE and not JDK. Make sure you have installed 64 bit of JDK (not JRE) and use -d64 )

C:\Program Files\Java\jre6>java -jar D:\wls1034_generic\installer.jar

In above command you are not using JDK and not using 64 bit (-d64) as mentioned in my previous post check again carefully http://onlineappsdba.com/index.php/2009/11/23/how-to-install-weblogic-server-on-64-bit-os-linux-solaris/

Hi Atul,

Here is the information:-

JDK Installed – jdk-6u23-windows-x64.exe
JRE Installed – jre-6u23-windows-x64.exe

Now, I am trying to install weblogic version 10.3.3

When i tried using jdk –
————————-
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\bin>java -d64 -jar D:\wls1033_generic\installer.jar

Unrecognized option: -d64
Could not create the Java virtual machine.

Then I tried removing -d64 switch –
———————————-
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\bin>java -jar D:\wls1033_generic\installer.jar

it gives the same error as before –

java.lang.classNotFoundException
com.bea.cie.gpr.internal.model.DelegateHomeListHelper

Please direct me to the link where I can find 64 bit jdk 1.6 update 18.

Atul Kumar says February 9, 2011

@ Nitin Aggarwal,
Apologies for -d64 , -d64 option is used only for 32/64 bit Hybrid JDKs only like HP-PA or Solaris64.

Try this
http://www.oldapps.com/java.php?old_java=55

If this is an issue , dowbnload executable version of weblogic 10.3.3 (this will come with 32 bit JDK of 16_18) see if that works.

Hi Atul,

I tried installing weblogic via installer(32 bit). Installation was successful but when i tried to install obiee 11g “Software only install”, it throws the following error – “unable to install or configure the product on a 32 bit JVM on a 64 bit machine”.

Please advice

@ Nitin Aggarwal,
Yes I was expecting this error so it is confirmed that We need 64 bit JDK

Install 64 bit JDK 1.6_18 and then user this JDK to install WebLogic

See if 64 bit Sun JDK for windows is available at
http://www.oldapps.com/java.php?old_java=55

Or JRockit http://download.oracle.com/otn/bea/jrockit/jrmc-3.1.2-1.6.0-windows-x64.exe ( Oracle JRockit Mission Control 3.1.2 under Previous JRockit version in Windows x86-64 at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/jrockit/downloads/index.html )

@ Severin,

In your case error message is ” An error occurred while starting the domain. ” which means issue is while starting Admin Server .

To find out root cause for Admin Start up check admin server log which should be at $DOMAIN_HOME/servers/Admin/logs

where domain_home is domain directory (default is user_projects/domains/base_domain) in middleware home

Severin says February 12, 2011

Thanks for help Atul. I cannot find that log. Could be because the install process still hangs at 0%?
The closest path to your suggest is this:
user_projects/domains/bifoundation_domain/servers/AdminServer and there is only a directory named Security containing a boot.properties file 🙁

What version of windows you are using .

If this is windows 7 or vista then disable user access control (UAC) restart machine and then try installing again.

Reply
Atul Kumar says August 10, 2011

@ deepsa,
In OBIEE 11g, there are two type of components

a) Java Component – Deployed on WebLogic Domain
b) System Components – managed by OPMN (These are old style presentation, BI Server, scheduler…)

Do you mean you want to run Java components on one machine and System component (OPMN related) on other.

In any topology, weblogic & OBIEE binary must be installed on all machines which are part of OBIEE 11g

Now i have installed Weblogic10.3 on linux-64 system and then installed OBIEE 11.1.1.5.0 software only installation in the same middleware(as used by weblogic)on the same linux-64 system.
So far so good.
Now i am able to see wlserver, Oracl_BI1 and /opt/beainstall/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/Weblogic/ObiEE11g(domain name)…..
But i am not able to see Instance folder ?????

How to get this folder?
Do i need to do any more configuration ?
How to make obiee11g run ??
I dont have any clue for next step..Please guide me here…..:)

@ Deepsa,
If you did just software only installation then you shouldn’t have user_projects/domains/Weblogic/ObiEE11g either.

To create/configure domain and OBIEE server run config.sh but from $ORACLE_HOME/bin

You will then get option to configure OBIEE domain and instance (OPMN services)

I got user_projects/domains/Weblogic/ObiEE11g from Weblogic installation. and then i started configuring from $ORACLE_HOME/bin and
choosen extending node option(3rd one in configruation step) and got the error.. here is the story.

I discarded the config installation and again tried . but now not able to start weblogic, its giving an error like: could not create the java virtual machine @ linux

@ Rahul,
No, just start rcu from rcu disk to create BI schema and then BI software from Disk1/runInstaller of OBIEE software

Hi,
I was upgrading Oracle BI Publisher from 10.1.3.4.1 to 10.1.3.4.2.
Now login is not happening. I bounced oc4j as well but no luck.

What to do?

Atul Sir,
Thanks. I the issue is solved.
we are using JNDI for Scheduler, so need to change one line in quartz-config.properties.

from:
org.quartz.jobStore.driverDelegateClass=org.quartz.impl.jdbcjobstore.oracle.OracleDelegate

To:
org.quartz.jobStore.driverDelegateClass=org.quartz.impl.jdbcjobstore.StdJDBCDelegate

& then restart the xmlpserver.ear file.
